Chinese Herbal Medicine

Medicinal Herbs have been used for centuries to cure diseases and alleviate discomfort as part of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The first Chinese herbalist tome, the Agriculture Emperor's Materia Medica, was written in 221-206BC.

Each herb has its own medicinal properties which include its energy, its flavour, its movement.

There are more than 450 deriatives used in Chinese Herbal Medicine - most are from plants though some animal and mineral substances may be used.

The herbs prescribed may be prescribed singly or made into a formulae which takes into account the individual therapeutic action of each herb and the effect when they are combined together.

The herbs may be prescribed in pill, capsule, powder, or in the raw form (such as leaves, twigs, roots, bark, seeds, nuts) and boiled in water and drunk as tea, or made into a cream or ointment.

Patent Medicines may also be prescribed and are manufactured according to a standard recipe and not individualised for the patient in quantities nor ingredients but provide a standardised formula for the type of condition you present with.

It is important as with all medicines - synthetic or natural - that you tell your practitioner about all supplements, pills, pharmaceutical prescriptions, naturopathic or homeopathic medicines that you are, or have recently taken. This is to ensure the medicines do not cancel each other out or react with each other.

Chinese Herbal Medicine also has a role in assisting in general health maintenance and disease prevention. You can take herbs as you do health food supplements to strengthen and enhance normal body functions, increasing your immunity & vitality
